Theis breaks course record at MSU Spartan Invite

Olivia Theis of Lansing Catholic MI cruised to a big early season win at the MSU Spartan Invitational on Friday by running 16:59.0 on the 5,000-meter course at Forest Akers East Golf Course. RESULTS

Theis, who was 14th at Foot Locker last year and was runner-up at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor 2-mile, beat a loaded field. Adelyn Ackley of Hart was second in 17:22.3 and Theis' younger sister, Jaden, was third in 17:26.8. 

Audrey Belf owned the course record at 17:14 from 2013 and was preceded by Erin Finn, who owned it with 17:16 as a junior in 2011. Meghan Goethals ran 17:22 in 2009, the year she won the Foot Locker national championship.
